New Zealand For Muslims 2009

This 72-page booklet was the first comprehensive catalogue of all the mosques and Islamic associations for the whole of New Zealand, from Whangarei to Invercargill, including:

              • all the halal butchers
              • all the halal food outlets
              • a history of Muslims in NZ
              • the number and make-up of Muslims in New Zealand
              • a prayer timetable for 2009
              • and much, much more!

In 2008, the editors produced a similar booklet entitled Auckland for Muslims, as a directory of Muslim places and services in Auckland. As soon as it was published, Muslims from other parts of New Zealand expressed their wish that it had also covered the rest of Aotearoa. So, we embarked on the substantial task of cataloguing other areas of New Zealand where Muslims live.

We hoped that the existence of this booklet will help two groups:

  • It should allow the Muslim community throughout New Zealand to follow their religion more easily: by going to the mosque for Friday prayers, Eid prayers and other occasions; by buying and eating halal food; by fulfilling their obligation to perform hajj in their lifetime; by following Islamic principles for birth, marriage and death; by sacrificing; etc.
  • We also hoped the booklet would be of use to Muslim tourists to Godzone and, if nothing else, to help them to avoid having to eat fish and chips for the whole of their stay here.

Please note that this booklet does not represent a halal certification scheme. Such a halal certification scheme is run by the Federation of Islamic Associations of New Zealand (FIANZ).
